When the Holidays Feel Different Than They Used to

For a lot of us, the holidays bring emotions that don’t fit a picture-perfect version of the season.

If you’re grieving someone you love, adjusting to an empty nest, navigating divorce, caring for aging parents, or simply realizing that life looks different than it used to, the holidays have a way of making those feelings impossible to ignore. Everything feels bigger and heavier than it is.

If this season feels heavier than it once did, you’re not doing anything wrong. You’re responding to a season of life that’s changing, and that deserves compassion just as much as celebration.

You’re doing the holidays wrong. You're just human.

Give Yourself Permission to Do Things Differently

One of the hardest parts of the holiday season is the expectation that everything should look the way it always has. But life changes. Families change. We change. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is give ourselves permission to let this season look different than the last one.

Instead of asking, How do I make everyone happy? try thinking, What do I need this year? You may need more rest, fewer obligations, or the freedom to create new traditions that better reflect where you are today. There's no right way to move through the holidays. There's only the way that feels most honest for you.

Letting Go of Perfect

The pressure to create the perfect holiday can leave us exhausted before the season is even over. Not every tradition has to continue, not every invitation has to be accepted, and not every problem has to be solved before everyone sits down at the table.

The holidays don’t become meaningful because everything goes according to plan. More often, they’re remembered because of the simple moments when we were fully present.

Protecting Your Peace

The holidays have a way of bringing old family roles back to life. It’s easy to slip back into familiar patterns or feel responsible for everyone else’s emotions. But growing older also gives us permission to respond differently.

You don’t have to explain every decision. You don’t have to fix every disagreement. Setting a boundary (or lots of them) can protect your peace. You can leave a gathering a little earlier than you normally would. And sometimes, it simply means choosing not to engage in conversations that no longer serve you.

A hand holds a champagne glass amidst falling star-shaped confetti at sunset. The scene is festive and warm with a blurred background.

Make Room for Yourself

When life gets busy, we’re often the first thing to disappear from our own schedules. We tell ourselves we’ll slow down after the holidays, after the guests leave, or after just one more event. The problem is that “after” has a way of never showing up.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be elaborate. A quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up, a walk around the neighborhood, a few minutes of journaling, or simply sitting in silence can help you reconnect with yourself. Those small moments make the biggest difference.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Season Alone

The holidays have a way of bringing life’s biggest questions to the surface. You may find yourself wondering what’s next, trying to make sense of a recent loss or transition, or simply feeling ready for something to change.

If the holidays are feeling differently for you, reach out for support

You don’t have to have all the answers right now. Sometimes the next step isn’t figuring everything out on your own. It’s having a conversation with someone who can help you sort through the noise, find clarity, and move forward with confidence.
